The Fund’s investment strategy combines
the Principals’ understanding of the opportunities
and challenges specific to the oil and gas technology
industry with the team’s substantial experience
as venture capital investors. Rather than investing
in specific technologies – often in search of
an application or market – the Fund will invest
in “market-driven solutions” being applied
to identified customer needs. The Fund’s strategy
for sourcing and evaluating investment opportunities
involves the following key areas:
- Investing in technology-based solutions to resource
problems that are economically important to end-users.
- Focusing on capital-efficient businesses with the
potential to address multiple target markets.
- Leveraging the Octane investment team’s position
in the technology sector to access the proprietary
deal flow, to lead investment rounds, and to attract
high-calibre co-investors.
- Profit from ‘market gap’ opportunities
where producers and service companies are not incented
to innovate.
The fund will invest in new technologies
from a variety of sources including spinouts from petroleum
and service companies, transfer of technologies from
other industries that have oil and gas applications
as well as energy technology start-ups. Octane will
invest from early stage to later stage companies with
a focus on technologies that have undergone field trials.
Octane will be unique in the focus on
oil and gas technology with the ability to invest in
oil and gas fields where the technology will significantly
improve the fundamental economics. The principals have
a strong technology commercialization background, petroleum
investment experience and are able to focus on building
world class management team and technology. |
